REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Three-year post-secondary program in a relevant field. Experience in research or in a direct client-facing role will be considered an asset.
• On-the-job training will provide the incumbent with specific knowledge required for the position.
• Safety-related training/certification will be provided on-the-job.
• Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Position Requirements

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Research Technician will work with minimum supervision on projects relating to cognitive dysfunction in people with epilepsy. The incumbent will identify and recruit research participants, assist with data acquisition, maintain lab space, and administrative tasks in relation to the ongoing research project.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Create and maintain a database of potential research participants derived from epilepsy clinic lists and make contact by telephone to recruit participants.
• Book research participants, including reserving appropriate slots in the William J Henderson Centre for Patient-Oriented Research and Centre for Neuroscience Studies MRI Facility.
• Complete consent forms, questionnaires and acquire data with the Kinarm robot and other laboratory equipment.
• Perform administrative tasks related to the research, such as reimbursing participants.
• Provide updates in writing or verbally at lab meetings on subject recruitment.
• Answer general inquiries and refer problems to Principal Investigator.
• Maintain strict participant and data confidentiality.
• Assist in the coordination of work study students (track hours, compensation, paperwork).
• Supervise students, ensuring compliance to proper ethics and safety protocols.
• Compile, organize and analyze data using special computer programs to aid in the research, analysis & presentation of data.
• Undertake other duties as delegated in support of the unit or department.

SPECIAL SKILLS:
• Able to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
• Organizational/analytical skills and ability to coordinate workflow. Judgement may be required in applying scientific principles to obtain accurate and relevant experimental results.
• Technical proficiency in the use of lab equipment and precision instruments.
• Ability to work with computers and use common office software for databases.
• Possess technical/scientific communication skills (written and verbal).
• Attention to detail and ability to perform careful measurements and interpret basic experimental results.
• Ability to learn quickly and adapt protocols as needs change (within guidelines).
• Proficiency in technical skills such as drafting as required.

DECISION MAKING:
• Decide on optimal protocol and equipment to use in running an experiment,
and decide on steps to take when assigned a new project.
• Determine how to deal with breakdowns and errors. Decide if problem can be resolved personally or if supervisor or equipment manufacturers should be involved.
• Determine best way to correct minor methodological deviations.
• Direct research inquiries to the proper person, or supply the answer if appropriate.
• Allocate and organize lab space.
• Prioritize time and determine most efficient use of personal resources within set of priorities outlined by supervisor.
• Assist in the generation of various documents and reports, and provide input
where appropriate. Participate and act as resource person in the production of more complex publications.
• Determine drawing layout/arrangement and presentation.
