Don’t be anxious at interviews, read this instead!

Our minds are pretty powerful tools. But they can sometimes cause us as many problems as they solve.

Things like unnecessary stress, anxiety, fear, and doubt — our brain conjures up emotions that can get in the way of performing our best.

Thankfully, some great minds have come up with tools to help us overcome these negative thoughts, in order to help us get back to our best!

Today, we’re going to take an overview of how you can overcome anxiety before your next interview, so you can be your best and get the best out of your career!

Choose positive stress management techniques

Sometimes stopping stress the wrong way can cause you to make things worse. Or else you simply bury the stress, only for it to come back bigger and badder later on.

You should discover some positive stress management techniques that work for you, and also consider what ways you might be managing stress which don’t contribute to your overall wellness.

Remember, wellness is about the big picture. If you drink heavily (or use other substances) to alleviate stress the night before an interview, you could just end up tired and hungover instead. Or if you overeat when you’re anxious, you might feel bloated and self-conscious during your interview.

Instead, try things like exercise, drinking more water, going to bed early, or even spending a few more minutes planning and practicing for your meeting. Not only do these things still distract your mind, but they also improve your overall physical and mental wellness!

Eat right, feel right

A mindful approach to your diet and nutrition can work wonders for your brain and body!

What we eat affects us in both the short and long term. A balanced diet, that’s not too little or too much, helps keep us energized and suppresses negative emotions.

Some foods like fruit, vegetables, and fatty fish, or foods with lots of vitamin B and zinc, can increase our bodies’ production of certain hormones. These “happy” hormones (dopamine and serotonin) are needed to help our minds stay calm and in control of our emotions.

Avoiding greasy and unhealthy foods also helps keep us in shape. And when you look better, you feel better too!

Plus, healthy home cooking can be a stress-relieving activity in and of itself!

It’s okay to not be okay

Even people with the best diets and the best stress management techniques still get anxious. It’s a natural response, and not one that needs to be covered up.

When you feel stressed, explore your feelings in a safe place, either with another person like a friend or counselor, or by listening to your own thoughts. One good way to open up by yourself is with a journal!

By sharing what you’re going through on paper or with other people, you can start to make your feelings more tangible, and easier to handle. It lets you start to see the problems more objectively, and can really put things in perspective.

And most of all, it lets you let them out. If you hold onto stress for too long, you’ll be burnt out and it won’t just affect your interview, but your whole life.

Conclusion

A mind is a terrible thing to waste — so don’t waste your time thinking stressful thoughts.

By practicing stress management and wellness techniques, you can channel your anxiety into excitement, and turn that negativity into positivity today!
