Required Qualifications

  • Sound knowledge of the occupational hazards of carpentry work and of the necessary safety precautions. Ability to follow safe working procedures in accordance with applicable safety policy, procedures and regulations.
  • Skill in the safe use and maintenance of carpentry tools and equipment.
  • Certificate of Qualification in General Carpentry and in good standing with Ontario College of Trades.
  • Several years of experience in a construction/industrial setting.
  • Proven millwork and door/hardware experience.
  • Familiarity with fire stopping products and methods.
  • Knowledge of applicable municipal and provincial codes and regulations.
  • Ability to work in a respectful way with others in the workplace.
  • Ability to effectively carry out tasks of the trade in an effectively and timely way.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and efficiently with other trades and university staff and students.
  • Ability to work within the operational and safety policies and procedures of Facilities.
  • Skill in the safe use and maintenance of tools and equipment of the trade.
  • Ability to learn and use required software systems such as the computerized maintenance management system, email and the University’s Human Resources MyHR.
  • Ability to learn and use a two-way radio system effectively.
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of the job.*
  • Must have a valid Ontario Class G Driver’s License.
  • The successful candidates will be required to produce a satisfactory Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Screen as a condition of employment.

Job Summary

Reporting to an Area Manager the Carpenter will perform repairs and preventative maintenance to the architectural component of the University’s buildings.

Must be willing to work overtime, respond to call-ins outside normal working hours, and work shifts as required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work safely in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its applicable regulations as well as adhering to Queen’s and Facilities Safety Policies and Procedures.
  • Respect diversity and promote inclusion in the workplace.
  • Perform repairs and preventative maintenance to the architectural component of the University’s buildings. This includes, but is not limited to, window, door and hardware maintenance, ceiling, wall and floor tile repairs, and classroom blackboard repairs.
  • Perform fire stopping for openings in fire rated assemblies.
  • Perform projects and renovations: This could include, but is not limited to, erecting walls, installing drywall, installing acoustical ceiling grid and tile, cement repair and demolition.
  • Construct and install various millwork projects including; cupboards, counter tops, bookshelves and display cases.
  • Operate various portable electric and manual hand tools and maintain Facilities Area workshop tools in good working condit
  • Work on scheduled shift and overtime when require
  • Document and manage workflow through the computerized maintenance management system.
  • Be accountable for timely and effective completion of assigned tasks.
  • Be a positive team member who recognizes the value of diversity in the workplace.
