REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Certification as a Second Class Operating Engineer under the Operating Engineers Act
- Currently in good standing with the TSSA combined with 5 years of experience with high-pressure boilers and Gas Fired Turbines
Additional training includes WHMIS, First Aid, CPR, ladder safety, fire extinguishers, gas turbine operation, confined space entry, fall arrest, crane and hoist, transportation of dangerous goods and traffic control for work in steam vaults located in city streets considered an asset

- Emotional ability to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations

- Ability to read and interpret instructions and charts correctly, and to compare online data with established parameters
DECISION MAKING:
- Takes equity and inclusivity into consideration when completing day-to-day tasks and decisions
- Operating decisions involving equipment when on shift (e.g. When to put another boiler or Co-Gen in service, which equipment to operate under emergency conditions)
- When on shift, the Second Class Engineer is expected to decide whether or not an operational problem warrants notification of management (e.g. Failure of a piece of equipment)
- Decisions involving chemical dosages for water treatment
- Determines priorities and makes decisions about staff utilization and the assignment of work to achieve optimum efficiencies and productivity
- Assesses employees’ training needs and makes recommendations for internal or external training to attain proficiency
- Monitors and assesses output and the quality of employees’ work, and recommends the need for formal training or development plans
Position Requirements
Reporting to the Utilities Manager the Second Class Operating Engineer is responsible for the operating of and the performance of maintenance on the Central Heating Plant equipment. The essential service (steam) provided by the plant enables the University and hospital to heat and humidify buildings, operate kitchens, sterilize surgical instruments and provide domestic hot water. The Central Heating Plant also provides normal and emergency power service to the University and Kingston Health Sciences Centre via a cogeneration system.
The schedule for the position requires the Second Class Operating Engineer to work 12 hour shifts 14 days per month and 8 hour maintenance shifts for 2 week periods, with the potential of working on statutory holidays.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The operation of plant equipment in compliance with The Operating Engineering Act
- Operate automated & computerized control system
- The operation of and performance of maintenance on all plant equipment such as boilers, turbines, diesel generators, pumps, and compressors
- Monitor and control boiler, cogeneration and steam distribution via computer terminals and control systems
- Ensure plant equipment is operating at maximum efficiency via regular inspections and comparing real time data with established parameters
- Clean and lubricate generators, turbine pumps and compressors
- Operate and control of two – 7.5 megawatt gas turbines and heat recovery steam generators, which supply power to Queen’s University & Kingston Health Sciences Centre, as well as 150,000 lbs / hr steam
- Perform routine and emergency maintenance on the steam distribution network
- Perform general housing keeping/ cleaning of the Central Heating Plant
- Provide work direction, and technical/functional guidance to staff
- Provide orientation and on-the-job training to employees in the unit. Provides coaching and feedback on work quality issues, providing related day-to-day supervision
