REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Four-Year Bachelor Degree
  • Master ‘s degree in Public Health preferred, combined with prior relevant experience
  • Experience in program analysis, project management, and reporting
  • Proficient computer skills, including, and Microsoft Office software products
  • Experience in a leadership or supervisory capacity would be considered an asset
  • Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and practical experience in public health

DECISION MAKING:

  • Recommend new procedures and changes to existing procedures in order to positively impact the Public Health Sciences departmental operation and to avoid future difficulties
  • Find solution to unanticipated problems within guidelines and decide whether complexity of the problem warrants the involvement of more senior staff. Determine how problem/solution will impact project development
  • Make recommendations for best practicum locations and preceptors on an annual basis; assign practicum placements in conjunction with student preferences and skills
  • Determine what information should be distributed, to whom and in what format; decisions will be made based on the relevance of the information and the impact that recipients can have on the project outcome
  • Make recommendations for program enhancements
  • Delegate work to casual staff and organize work in order to make the most efficient and cost-effective progress towards goal

Position Requirements

Reporting to the Department Head, Public Health Sciences, the Professional Development Officer will be responsible for negotiating, managing and evaluating practicum placements for students in the Department of Public Health courses and programs. The practicum is a required graduate course for students in the Master of Public Health (MPH) program, comprised of a minimum 400 hour placement with a professional public health agency. Other Public Health Sciences programs and courses at the undergraduate and graduate level also offer practicum placement opportunities or requirements. The Professional Development Officer will be required to communicate and negotiate with Medical Officers of Health, Executive Directors of Local Health Integration Networks and Senior Managers of agencies like Public Health Ontario and the Public Health Agency of Canada and other organizations. The Professional Development Officer will develop and maintain positive working relationships with these agencies and organizations, and will advise and match Public Health Sciences students to these agencies. The Professional Development Officer will be responsible for ensuring the academic integrity of the practicum placement and for resolving any problems that may arise. The Professional Development Officer may also receive guidance from the MPH Program Director.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage practicum placement program, which includes negotiating, managing and evaluating practicum placements for students in Public Health Sciences courses and programs
  • Maintain and grow a network of host organizations and preceptors for practicum placements at the local, provincial, national and global level
  • Communicate and negotiate with Medical Officers of Health, Executive Directors of Local Health Integration Networks and Senior Managers of agencies like Public Health Ontario and the Public Health
  • Agency of Canada and other organizations; develop and maintain positive working relationships with these agencies and organizations; and advise and match Public Health Sciences students to these and other agencies
  • Orient preceptors to requirements and communicate as needed during and after practicum; acknowledge preceptor contributions
  • Act as the contact person for concerns, inquiries and comments related to the programs and courses in Public Health Sciences; provide practicum information and guidance to Public Health Sciences students
  • Provide group information sessions for students (e.g. June meet and greet event, September orientation week session, March pre-departure session)
  • Generate and identify opportunities for students about potential practicum projects using an online internal web-space
  • Meet with each student in advance of the placement to help facilitate matching practicum opportunities with student interests
  • Communicate with students during the practicum placement as appropriate (e.g. to review practicum description, midpoint evaluation etc.) Meet with each student post-practicum to debrief and collect summative evaluation material
  • Evaluate formal practicum reports; lead specific program related projects, including the assessment of current evaluation strategy and tools for the practicum placement, and redesign of the practicum evaluation to professionalize and align it with the program’s competency-based portfolio
  • Review and approve all practicum placements and student applications for stipends
  • Approve all risk assessments and ensure students who are undertaking international placements especially are appropriately prepared
  • Administer communication and paperwork associated with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, James Rossiter MPH Practicum Awards
  • Ensure that Affiliation Agreements are accurately and appropriately executed for each practicum site.
  • Sit on the MPH program committee and provide a report at monthly meetings
  • Develop and locate tools to assess professionalism and professional development; educate students on professional development and lifelong learning
  • Liaise with organizations and individuals leading professional development in public health; identify professional development opportunities and communicate them to students
  • Other duties as assigned
