The 3 C’s of Job Searching!
Don’t you wish job searching could be as easy as A B C?
Well, good news! Some of the most important aspects of looking for work CAN be summed up in just 3 letters!
Let’s call them: The 3 C’s of Job Searching!
Today, we’ll go over this simple mnemonic tool to remember your big 3 priorities as a jobseeker. By keeping them in mind, you’ll be able to move on to your next great job faster and easier than ever before!
Ready to find out what they are? Let’s find out!
Customize!
The first thing most recruiters will see of you is your cover letter and resume.
But if you don’t want to be just another cookiecutter applicant in their eyes, you can’t have a cookiecutter resume.
That’s why the first C is “Customize”, as in: customize your documents for the job!
Just like you should dress for the job you want, you should also dress up your resume for the job you’re applying for.
To do this, you’ll need to make sure the language you use matches important keywords from the job description. You should also make appropriate use of industry jargon that shows off your expertise and insider knowledge.
Never duplicate your resume word-for-word from one employer to the next if you can help it. Just a simple tweak to your verbiage, and a personalized cover letter, can make a huge difference to your chances of getting in.
In certain fields, you can also customize other professional portfolios, like graphic designs or technical projects that you can provide them a link to. Having your own website also gives you complete customization control over how you present yourself to would-be employers!
Connect!
As a job seeker doing research online (like reading this article!) you’ve probably heard non-stop reminders about the importance of networking.
And that’s because as someone looking to move into a different part of the workforce, you’ll need to network non-stop to make that transition attainable!
And that’s why the next C is “Connect”, as in: connect with other professionals!
But while networking is something you should be doing all the time, it isn’t something that has to take up ALL of your time.
Set aside a bit of time during every day you are actively looking for work to connect with people across your industry. A great starting point is to simply REconnect with old colleagues, classmates, mentors, and those who have supported you to get where you are today — those people are likely more than happy to keep helping you move forward!
Networking also doesn’t have to be formal, or 1-on-1. You can also go to informal meetups, workshops, group classes, etc. All that matters is getting your name and face out there so that others might think of you when an opportunity arises.
Continue!
They say “it isn’t over until it’s over”. As a job seeker, you can’t stop seeking until you find what it is you’re looking for!
So that’s why the final C is for “Continue”, as in: don’t give up!
That said, looking for work can be exhausting itself. So part of how you continue your search is to make sure you are minding your mental wellness while you do.
Organize your time so you can take breaks and still live your life comfortably. Make sure your finances are in order so you can focus on your career instead.
You need to stay positive so that you can stay proactive and keep pushing toward the next big step in your career!
And don’t be afraid to try new avenues to get what you want. That could be anything like getting some help with interview coaching, or signing up for LinkedIn if you haven’t already, or looking for remote work in a different town, or even breaking into a new industry!
Don’t just continue in a straight line if you’re hitting a wall. The point is to continue to build your momentum!
