REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree in a relevant field with several years of experience working with online/blended learning
- Demonstrated knowledge of learning technologies and effective application in course design
- Sound knowledge of principles, best practices, and techniques of instructional design
- Previous project management experience
- Understanding of content development tools/programs and online learning environments
- Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience

Contribute to course production discussions, and pursue ongoing communication with instructors and other staff during course development and revisions. Able to discuss teaching and learning theories
- Technical Skills: Excellent computer skills and ability to readily learn new applications. Knowledge of technology supports for teaching and learning such as web conferencing, podcasting, authoring tools, etc. Able to utilize templates within LMS’s and attend to potentials and limits. Implement learning activities/tasks, build assessment mechanisms, and develop digital content from source materials
- Time Management Skills: Ability to effectively coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks, staying focused on high-impact initiatives. Able to work independently and with minimal supervision. Strong organization ability to manage multiple priorities and projects at the same time
DECISION MAKING:
- Utilizes own judgment to determine strengths and weaknesses of online/blended courses
- Makes recommendations to improve the structure and quality of courses on the basis of best practices and feedback from students and/or instructors
- Determines best tools and applications for an effective teaching and learning environment
- Recommends appropriate policy, procedures, and guidelines in support of course development and delivery
- Decides when intervention or support is needed to meet completion deadlines, involving others as required
- Determines alternate design strategies if copyright issues are restrictive to use
- Determines method to employ in analysis, synthesis, and clarification of information
- Determines content, format, and delivery of workshops
- Undertake other duties as required in support of the program
Position Requirements
The Office of Professional Development and Educational Scholarship (OPDES) offers a variety of academic services to meet the educational and research needs of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS). Services include individual, departmental, faculty-wide and institutional consultations on all aspects of the educational process at the Faculty level; providing support and leadership with curriculum and course design and development; building and maintaining courses for online delivery; assessment strategies; program evaluation; research on teaching and learning; and accreditation.
Reporting to the Office Manager, OPDES and receiving work direction from the Director, Online Learning, OPDES, the incumbent works closely with instructors to design online and blended courses to support active learning by applying best online instructional practices and learning technologies. The incumbent is responsible for implementing guidelines and setting standards for the structure and overall quality of online course materials. The incumbent is also responsible for coordinating the development and implementation of a wide range of online courses and associated components by reviewing and assessing courses, as well as ensuring that online courses are developed using sound design and development practices.
As an Educational Development & Instructional Designer, you will lead a fast-paced and collaborative team through the creation of state-of-the-art interactive online learning modules for leaders in Canadian health education. You will work closely with subject matter experts, Instructional Design Assistants, and Educational Development & User Experience Designers to create engaging and accessible online modules. Your knowledge of educational pedagogy, instructional design principles, and online learning best practices will ensure our team is creating the high-quality courses expected from Queen’s University.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with instructors as a resource to outline a course development plan and implementation timeline
- Provide training and support regarding teaching strategies, learning activities, assessments, and the integration of appropriate learning technologies
- Act as a project manager for online/blended course development to ensure timelines are met
- Develop, or assist with, instructional workshops for instructors addressing best practices and identifying research in support of teaching and learning online
- Provide work direction, guidance and expertise to the course production team when building the components of a course, and implementing learning activities/tasks, building assessments and developing digital content from source materials in appropriate media format
- Provide advice on how to improve accessibly in courses, and ensure courses are compliant with relevant legislation (e.g. Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act)
- Liaise with copyright librarian to identify appropriate digital resources for instructors to consider in their course, ensure copyright permissions are secured, and document the use of copyright items
- Provide advice about emerging trends and industry standards for the development and delivery of online courses
