Groundsworker

Education/Training/Certifications
Required Qualifications:
• Completion of post-secondary education in horticulture combined with 5 to 10 years of related experience within the commercial landscape horticulture field.
• Minimum 2 years experience with commercial snow removal and de-icing operations.
• Experience safely operating heavy equipment including industrial mowers, line trimmers, hedge trimmers, and chain saws.
• Completion of chainsaw operators course would be an asset.
• Possess a current valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence.
• Working knowledge of commercial grounds maintenance and horticultural practices.
• Ability to work within the operational and safety policies and procedures of Facilities.
• Ability to follow landscape sketches and designs.
• Ability to work effectively and efficiently independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to learn and use required software systems such as a computerized maintenance management system, email and the university’s Human Resources MyHR program.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Ability to perform the physical demands of the job.
• The successful candidates will be required to produce a satisfactory Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Screen as a condition of employment.
Position Requirements
Reporting to the Manager, Grounds Operations, the Groundsworker will perform the daily care and treatments necessary to maintain campus grounds to ensure they meet accepted beautification and safety standards.
The successful candidate must be willing to work overtime, respond to call-ins outside of normal working hours, and work varying shifts as required.
Candidate success is based on a good work ethic, ability to learn and practice new skills, embracing Facilities mission and values, and respecting diversity and promoting inclusion in the workplace.
Key Responsibilities:
• Work safely in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its applicable regulations as well as adhering to Queen’s and Facilities’ Safety Policies and Procedures.
• Respect diversity and promote inclusion in the workplace.
• Maintain the campus grounds to acceptable beautification and safety standards by planting, cultivating, pruning and trimming and general care of flowers, perennials, shrubs and trees.
• Mowing and trimming and turf care as required.
• De-icing and removal of snow from sidewalks, paths and exterior stairways.
• Work with Stores to obtain and document required parts and supplies.
• Be accountable for timely and effective completion of assigned tasks.
• Be a positive team member, who recognizes the value of diversity in the workplace.
