Arts Stage Technician

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Post-secondary school diploma with knowledge of theatrical and music practices an asset.
• Advanced experience (5+ years) working as a video/camera technician in film studio or live performance venue(s).
• Experience working with artists in a professional performing arts environment.
• Experience in theatrical lighting design, audio set up and operation, as well as stage management would be an asset.
• Experience in a live performance environment.
• Understanding of safe rigging and materials lifting practices an asset.
• Valid Province of Ontario Class G driver’s license is considered an asset.
• Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
SPECIAL SKILLS:
• Experience working with artists and leading stage set up and rehearsals/sound checks for a variety of music styles.
• Knowledge and experience using still cameras (LUMIX an asset) and PTZ (Cannon an asset) cameras, lenses, switchers (Blackmagic an asset), live streaming hardware and software.
• Knowledge and experience with video editing software (e.g., DaVinci, Final Cut, Premier).
• Knowledge and experience with PowerPoint software.
• Understanding of the operation of lighting, projection and sound systems.
• High level of tact and discretion, maturity, and good judgement as well as the ability to deal with sensitive issues in a professional manner.
• Organizational, and time-management skills. Ability to maintain focus under pressure and with frequent interruptions.
• Experience using ETC Eos family lighting consoles would be considered an asset.
• Knowledge of theatrical and music production and best work practices.
• Interpersonal and communications skills to deal with a wide variety of individuals including artists, staff, tour management, rental clients, and academic faculty.
• Service-oriented, proactive perspective.
• Ability to take direction, as well as constructively functioning in a team environment.
• Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to artistic work, and exercise creative thinking and situational awareness to develop solutions.
• Computer and office skills, including proficiency with a variety of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications, as well as an ability to learn new software.

Position Requirements
Reporting to the Director and receiving support and daily direction from the Technical Director, the Arts Stage Technician is a senior, experienced production professional who works well in a production team environment and is responsible for providing technical services and production support to all programming at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts (“the Isabel”) at Queen’s University. The Isabel produces excellent live and streamed performances and events with advanced technological capabilities.
The primary focus of this role is to act as a senior videographer/visual technician, operating cameras for recording and livestreaming.
In addition to the videographer and visual technician duties, the duties of the Arts Stage Technician are to assist artists with loading in, setup, show operations, and loading out. The Arts Stage Technician provides excellent customer service support to visiting artists and clients. The Arts Stage Technician primarily works in the Performance Hall, but will provide production services to all Isabel spaces, in addition to performing related administrative duties.
The Arts Stage Technician provides event-specific supervisory support to casual production staff as required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• As assigned by the Technical Director on an event-by-event basis, execute the roles of the Arts Stage Technician including duties such as stage management, the operation of lighting, sound, cameras, video projection or other stage equipment, and participate in the load-in, setup, and load-out of programming.
• As assigned by the Technical Director, operate the cameras/video for recorded and livestreamed events.
• Supervise casual production personnel on an event specific basis for set-ups, rehearsals, performances, concerts and load-outs as required.
• Assist touring productions, artists, and rental clients in the effective application of technical equipment and systems. This can include fulfilling the requirements of technical riders, stage plots, or designing functional production systems as needed.
• Participate in the creative and artistic vision and execution of productions in collaboration with the artist.
• Serve as the onsite contact and venue liaison for artists, tour management and rental clients as required.
• Provide orientation for rental clients or visiting productions on safety, technical specifications, and other areas of facility operations.
• Maintain the working condition of venue equipment, including records of maintenance. Identify issues and solutions and provide advice on new acquisitions.
• Understand and abide by the Safety Guidelines for the Live Performance Industry of Ontario, Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA), Ontario Building Code and Ontario Fire Code.
• Act as a Crowd Manager for building evacuation and protect-in-place situations.
• Perform other basic administrative tasks such as photocopying, filing, and receiving deliveries.
• Liaise with artists to facilitate the beginning of each act of a performance (in conjunction with the event Usher Captain).
• Liaise with the Isabel’s Administrative Office and Box Office as required.
• Attend production and staff meetings as required.
• Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the loading dock, tool shop, backstage areas and equipment storage rooms.
• Supervise the appropriate use of the back of house rooms (dressing rooms, green room) by artists, tour management and rental clients.
• Deliver or obtain supplies from local vendors as required.
• Provide tours of the facility to clients and visitors as required.
• Undertake other duties as delegated in support of the unit or department.
