REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s Degree or equivalent is required in a related discipline (i.e., Policy Studies, Social Studies, Law)
- Demonstrated knowledge of human rights, diversity, accessibility, anti-racism and equity including applicable legislation; demonstrated experience working with equity-deserving communities is essential
- Several years (minimum 5 years) experience in delivering content and context-appropriate human rights and social justice education to diverse audiences within a university setting
- High level of competency in qualitative data analysis, required
- High level of experience in social media, considered an asset
- Satisfactory Criminal Records Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) required
- Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience
SPECIAL SKILLS:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as interpersonal skills to interact with individuals at every level and from many different equity perspectives, demonstrating a high level of tact and diplomacy and respect for confidentiality
- Ability to lead diverse groups and build consensus; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other individuals and groups, including equity-deserving groups, that work in complementary areas and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Strong educational/training and presentation skills including the development of educational materials

- Advanced skills in the use of computers for information distribution/reporting; proven level of competency in Word and Excel
- Sound knowledge and experience in action-oriented goal setting to address equity issues facing women, persons with disabilities, members of racialized groups, Indigenous persons and persons of diverse sexual orientations and identities, as well as other equity deserving groups preferably within an academic or related context
- Sound knowledge and experience in the areas of Accessibility, Employment Equity, Anti-Racism Diversity and Human Rights, including legislative framework
- Broad knowledge of institutional structures, policy, regulations and administrative systems in university or equivalent context
DECISION MAKING:
- Determines when and where interventions may be needed for the university to remain compliant with current legislative requirements
- Determine appropriate training requirements
- Participates on committees working toward the determination of goals of equity and accessibility programs
- Makes recommendations to Committees regarding equity and accessibility issues and ensures consultation with equity deserving groups
- Recommends best alternatives within a range of solutions to a given problem, identifying potential risks and benefits of each
- Prioritizes action items required by the regulatory and legislative framework within fiscal realities
- Decides when it is appropriate to act on own initiative and when to consult with the Associate Director, Education and Learning or the Equity Advisor
Position Requirements
Equity Services is responsible for ensuring that equity is achieved throughout the university. Reporting to the Associate Director, Education and Learning, and co-supervised by the Equity Advisor, the Equity Education and Learning Coordinator (Coordinator) is responsible for the administration and coordination of equity related requirements including employment and educational equity initiatives and training requirements throughout the university. The Coordinator will also have special responsibilities for developing equity, diversity, inclusion (EDI), and anti-racism awareness-raising and education strategies specifically within the Athletics & Recreation portfolio.
The Coordinator is also responsible for the planning and implementation of projects that have university wide implications, including the advancement of employment and educational equity, as well as the university’s Diversity and Equity Assessment and Planning Tool (DEAP). The Coordinator works with students, staff and faculty to provide leadership on a broad range of campus/community projects that address employment equity, educational equity, anti-racism, and accessibility issues. This includes the development of educational tools, communications strategies, the facilitation of training, and the coordination of committees with responsibilities for equity and accessibility.
The incumbent is responsible for identifying priority issues and projects in close collaboration with the Associate Director, Education and Learning in the Human Rights and Equity Office (HREO), as well as the Executive Director, Athletics & Recreation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborates with the HREO and Athletics & Recreation Department to coordinate, develop, implement and monitor, Human Rights, Equity and Accessibility Initiatives
- Acts as an advisor regarding Human Rights, Equity and Accessibility Initiatives to the Executive Director, Athletics & Recreation and the Athletics & Recreation staff. Acts as a change champion and drives the department towards a culture of inclusion and belonging through the creative use of relevant tools, such as the Diversity and Equity Assessment and Planning (DEAP) Tool and strategies
- Assists departments in facilitating meaningful engagement with Black, Indigenous, and racialized groups and/or underrepresented individuals and/or groups
- Offers advice regarding equity considerations that create best practices for the recruitment and selection, and the support and retention of diversified staff
- Serves as a consultant to units/departments (i.e., faculties, departments, administrators and managers, unionized and non-unionized staff) to establish timetables and helps achieve equity goals, including reviewing representation and distribution of equity-deserving group members in the Queen’s workforce to assist units on decreasing gaps
- Coordinates the delivery of training, which includes leading teams and teaching others to develop and deliver Human Rights, Equity and Accessibility training
- Assists units with ensuring that they are addressing the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) requirements in a manner that is complementary to the accommodation services led by the coordinators of accommodation services for students and staff with disabilities
- Sits on academic and workplace committees where appropriate. Provides advice and administrative support to equity working groups
- Provides information, resources and advice to students, staff, faculty and the community to support the implementation of equity and accessibility initiatives policies. Conducts research, prepares reports and correspondence for information sharing purposes. Acts as a liaison to develop working relationships with various equity-deserving communities
- Consults widely within the Queen’s University community and broader community to gain information to formulate advice, action plans and recommendations that meet the needs of the university and its users with respect to a systemic approach to equity and accessibility
- Undertake other duties, as required, in support of the HREO, and/or Athletics & Recreation Department
