Kitchen Mechanic

Reporting to the assigned Area Manager, Facilities Operations, the Kitchen Mechanic will troubleshoot and repair all kitchen-related mechanical and electrical equipment including fryers, steamers, griddles, hot boxes, conveyor systems, specialty coffee makers and dishwashers; perform scheduled preventive maintenance, inspection, and repair; install and maintain new equipment (assist HVAC team on cooler and freezer installations); and test and operate all equipment to ensure proper function.
The successful candidate must be willing to work overtime, respond to call-ins outside of normal working hours as required.

Key Responsibilities:
• Work safely in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its applicable regulations as well as adhering to Queen’s and Facilities Safety Policies and Procedures.
• Be a positive team member who respects diversity and promotes inclusion in the workplace.
• Troubleshoot and repair all kitchen-related mechanical and electrical equipment including fryers, steamers, griddles, hot boxes, conveyor systems, specialty coffee makers and dishwashers.
• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, inspection and repair.
• Install and maintain new equipment (assist HVAC team on cooler and freezer installations) and test and operate all equipment to ensure proper function.
• Comply with TSSA regulations, Ontario Electrical Safety Code.
• Perform other related duties as assigned, including maintaining and repairing other building mechanical equipment.
• Operate various portable electric and manual hand tools and maintain Facilities area workshop tools to ensure they remain in good working condition.
• Document and manage workflow through the computerized maintenance management system.
• Work with Stores colleagues to obtain and document required parts and supplies.
• Be accountable for timely and effective completion of assigned tasks.
• Accept call-ins outside normal working hours and work overtime when required.
• Provide peer training and apprenticeship mentorship as applicable.
Required Qualifications:
• Sound knowledge of the occupational hazards of trades work and of the necessary safety precautions. Ability to work in accordance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable university and departmental safety policy, procedures and regulations.
• Gas Technician G2 or higher.
• Technical certificate or equivalent skill level in one or more areas of plumbing, electrical, gas, mechanical systems and controls.
• Minimum of five years’ experience in electrical, plumbing, gas, mechanical systems or controls (preferably in a restaurant environment).
• Possess a valid Ontario Class G driver’s license and be insurable under the university’s insurance plan.
• Refrigeration license preferred.
• Factory training by major kitchen equipment manufacturers preferred.
• Skill in the safe use and maintenance of tools and equipment of the trade.
• Ability to effectively carry out tasks of the trade in an effective and timely way.
• Knowledge of applicable municipal and provincial codes and regulations.
• Ability to work in a respectful and inclusive way with others in the workplace.
• Ability to work effectively independently and efficiently with other trades and university staff and students.
• Ability to learn and use required software systems such as the computerized maintenance management system, email and the university’s Human Resources System (MyHR).
• Ability to learn and use a two-way radio system effectively.
• Ability to perform the physical demands of the job.*
• The successful candidates will be required to produce a satisfactory Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Screen as a condition of employment.
