Education/Training/Certifications
- University Degree in Occupational Therapy, eligible for professional registration in Ontario
- A minimum of three years of practice as an occupational therapist
- Excellent cross-cultural capacity and experience in international development contexts
- Knowledge of Queen’s University Occupational Therapy program is considered an asset
- Experience teaching in OT settings, instructional design and curriculum development is considered an asset
- Ability to travel internationally, to Gondar, Ethiopia for short and/or medium-term (approx. 2-6 weeks) working visits, approximately two times per year
- Ability to travel internationally, to various countries on the continent of Africa to complete site visits for placements
- Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience

- Excellent planning and organizational skills, foresight and management of potential conflict, initiative and flexibility with the ability to problem solve and work within tight timelines
- Strong initiative and ability to work independently, identify project needs, assume responsibility and prioritize
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Written and verbal aptitude is required
- Ability to recognize emerging problems, resolve them when possible and seek input and assistance from others in a timely fashion

- Interpret, analyze, and implement policies and procedures, and recommend changes to meet goals
DECISION MAKING:
- Assess problems and situations to identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate solutions and make recommendations to resolve problems
- Identify and collaborate with key stakeholders to support students, faculty, and project team in making decisions while considering varying needs
- Determine and evaluate criteria to measure effectiveness of recruitment and admissions.

- Identify opportunities for improvement and provide recommendations or strategies for changes, including introduction of new policies, procedures, reporting mechanisms, to best address the needs of multiple stakeholders and achieve educational objectives

- Identify gaps in resources and services or functions that need improvement to leadership based on knowledge of student and faculty needs and recommend appropriate solutions; participating in the modifications as required
- Identify and monitor safety and security for the project and support risk mitigation and management for those involved in the project especially as it relates to clinical placements
Position Requirements
Reporting to the Canadian Mastercard Foundation Project Manager, and in collaboration with the Associate Director (Occupational Therapy Program), Chair of the Occupational Therapy Curriculum Committee, Occupational Therapy Fieldwork Coordinator, and the Student Faculty Liaison, the Occupational Therapy (OT) Program Coordinator is responsible for supporting the integration of Ethiopian students into the Queen’s Master of Science Occupational Therapy MSc (OT) Program. The incumbent will coordinate the development of an undergraduate OT curriculum and a complementary OT skills lab at the University of Gondar (UoG) in Ethiopia.
The OT Program Coordinator will work closely with faculty members in the OT Program to facilitate learning with Ethiopian counterparts and students to support their success in the MSc (OT) program. The incumbent will coordinate the activities associated with developing, implementing, and evaluating the undergraduate OT program at University of Gondar liaising with all relevant stakeholders.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Within the MSc (OT) Program at Queen’s
- Bridge project team, leadership, and faculty together to ensure a successful experience for Ethiopian OT students, both while at Queen’s university and while in UoG OT program.
- Review and analysis of program applications to ensure completion and help identify learning knowledge gaps to suggest pre-readings to applicants; supporting the admissions committee as required
- Liaison officer for the external members of UoG and the internal members of School of Graduate Studies (SGS) and OT program to support the recruitment and selection process of OT candidates
- Manage and monitor activity progress and coordinate agenda items for OT program meeting with project co-director
- Collaborate with and support the Queen’s faculty and Ethiopian students of the MSc (OT) program, and to ensure a successful integration and positive learning environment; resolving problems or issues preventing the success of the program
- In collaboration with the School of Rehabilitation Therapy (SRT) OT clinical placement coordinator, participate in the planning and development of potential clinical placement sites throughout Africa
- Under direction and discretion of the SRT OT clinical placement coordinator, act as the primary contact for inquires regarding international placement sites for Ethiopian students
- Provide clinical OT preceptorship as needed for clinical placements in Ethiopia/Africa for MSc (OT) students
- Collaborate with students of MSc (OT) program to support their transition back to Ethiopia as faculty; coordination of mentorship programs, workshops and connections with Queen’s resources
- Represent the OT Program at retreats, international conferences and presentations within the OT Program at Gondar
- Provide input into the creation of an OT clinical skills lab for experiential learning at UoG
- Support UoG OT program development, working with the Ethiopian OT Coordinator to: establish timelines and work schedules, identify academic consultants, liaise with Ethiopian Queen’s OT alumni and include them in the process, support the curriculum development, support with preparation of documents for official approval of educational programs in Ethiopia, ensure that all curriculum aligns with World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) standards, and work to submit for WFOT accreditation
- Develop innovative ideas and participate in the awareness building of the profession in Ethiopia.
- Develop and deliver awareness workshops and co-teach to build the profession both within UoG and broadly within Ethiopia
- Support the needs assessment and benchmarking process for the undergrad OT program in Ethiopia. Work to complete WFOT situational analysis and establish the WFOT project group and OT association for Ethiopia
- Coordinate the planning, implementation and evaluation of the undergraduate program at UoG.
- Work with project team to solidify OT jobs in Gondar which support clinical skill development for new grads and future placements for undergrad class
- Identify and develop partnerships with Faculty of Health Sciences UoG to have interdisciplinary educational learning and also teach about OT within their curriculum as a strategy for awareness building
- Work to establish a library with appropriate books and resources for UoG
- Support UoG with the professional license process and work/payment scale, as required
