REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- A post-secondary degree in a relevant field, such as Social Work, Education, Gender Studies, Critical Race and/or Disabilities Studies or Law; with demonstrated knowledge of critical/feminist perspectives within the relevant discipline. A graduate degree is preferred
- Five years’ experience in an area relevant to the position, including a minimum of three years’ experience working with survivors of sexual violence and leading sexual violence prevention and response education and awareness initiatives, using trauma informed and intersectional approaches.
- Proven ability to develop and deliver effective and sensitive sexual violence education programming that is appropriately geared to the needs of adult learners, including undergraduate and graduate students, university staff, and faculty
- In depth knowledge of current theories and practices related to sexual/gender-based violence as they apply to the post-secondary institutions, the justice system, and healthcare systems
- Working knowledge of relevant legislation
- Demonstrated experience working within equity-seeking communities, particularly Black, Indigenous, People of Colour (BIPOC), LGBTQ+, persons with disabilities, and international students, preferably in the context of a post-secondary institution
- In depth knowledge of the unique barriers experienced by survivors from marginalized communities in accessing support services, accommodations, and policies/procedures
- Proficiency in IT software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software; experience with responsible use of social media platforms for educational/awareness purposes and the creation of online educational modules an asset
- Satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening required
- Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience
SPECIAL SKILLS:
- Ability to remain calm in emotionally charged situations, while providing sensitive, practical and balanced advice in response to disclosures of sexual violence
- Ability to respond tactfully and constructively to challenging situations that may arise in teaching and learning contexts with diverse participants.
- Ability to advise on survivor-centric approaches to individual and systemic manifestations of sexual violence that are legally sound
- Ability to apply intersectional, anti-oppression, anti-racist, and decolonial theoretical frameworks to issues of sexual violence
- Ability to creatively translate research on effective sexual violence prevention and response practices into accessible and engaging learning materials
- Ability to build trust and supportive relationships with members of marginalized communities (Indigenous, racialized, LGBTQ+, people with disabilities, etc.) who experience barriers to accessing sexual violence related services
- Ability to build effective relationships and work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders and community partners to balance multiple interests and within a team context
- Sound research and analytical skills
- Exceptional oral and written communication
- Knowledge of planning and project management. Ability to exercise exceptional judgement with respect to managing sensitive and confidential information
DECISION MAKING:
- Evaluate training content, and readily assess and manage classroom dynamics, in order to maintain positive and effective learning environments
- Evaluate students’ concerns, and make decisions with respect to the most appropriate interventions
- Evaluate community concerns, and make decisions with respect to the most appropriate approach to the issues
- Make decisions regarding when to refer students, and to whom, both within and outside the university community
- Make decisions with respect to the degree of risk to the client or to others in the university that a situation may pose
- Distinguish between circumstances in which decisions can be made independently and those where consultation is warranted
Position Requirements
Reporting to the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Coordinator (SVPRC), the SVPR Community Outreach and Student Support Worker is a central University resource for education about sexual violence prevention and response as well as a central support for students who have experienced or been impacted by sexual violence. The Community Outreach and Student Support Worker works collaboratively with the SVPR Coordinator and other members of the Human Rights and Equity Office team, as well as university and local community partners, to develop and deliver educational and awareness programming aimed at creating a consent culture on campus. The Community Outreach and Student Support Worker provides guidance on accessing university and community resources, and assists students with safety planning and with navigating available policies, procedures, and services. The Community Outreach and Student Support Worker works with the SVPR Coordinator and the SVPR Taskforce on the development and implementation of effective strategies and protocols for preventing and responding to sexual violence as it affects students.
The schedule for this position requires the incumbent to work some evenings and weekends.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work closely with the Associate Director, Education and Learning to develop and deliver training and education materials to increase awareness of Queen’s sexual violence policy, as well as sexual violence prevention strategies and resources available to students, staff and faculty.
- Work collaboratively with campus partners and student leaders on bystander and other sexual violence prevention and response education, using a variety of educational media, tools and strategies
- Respond, as the first point of contact, to student disclosures of sexual violence to provide guidance on accessing available resources and potential next steps based on assessment of the circumstances, in accordance with university policy
- Develop familiarity and positive working relationships with constituents involved in assisting student survivors of sexual violence including but not limited to student leaders, Division of Student Affairs, Student Conduct, Student Wellness Services, Human Resources, Faculty Relations, Office of the University Ombudsperson, Campus Security and Emergency Services, Kingston Police, local healthcare providers.
- Participate on campus and community committees, as well as cross-university sector networks, of individuals engaged in sexual violence prevention and response work
- Maintain understanding of relevant legal and policy documents in order to appropriately advise students affected by sexual violence.
- Direct respondents of allegations of sexual violence to appropriate resources that can provide guidance on Queen’s policy and available services
- Maintain statistics as required by the university for internal and external reporting purposes
